Male dolls are under-appreciated in the doll collecting community. Generally, they are only companions to a popular female doll, but they were in the spotlight at the April 2026 Letitia Penn Doll Club meeting. Our members have wonderful collections full of many surprising treasures. This month, “No Girls Allowed!!” Here are a few of the dolls our members brought to share:
Just for fun: Who Is This Guy Anyway?
- I was introduced in 1920 in a storybook. When humans aren’t looking, I have misadventures with my doll friends. My best feature is definitely my red hair.
- I am best known as “the boyfriend.” My girlfriend and I started dating in 1961, but we broke it off in 2022 and are now “just friends.” Whatever!!
- Action figures are very popular now, but I am probably the first superhero doll ever mass produced. Ideal Toy Company made me in 1940 out of composition. My eyes may be crazed, but I can still see through walls.
- Not to brag, but I’m actually considered a dummy, not a doll. I debuted on the radio in 1936 with my sidekick. We entertained for decades on radio and TV, ending our career with a role in The Muppet Movie in 1978.
- Everyone says I’m adorable. I have what’s called a “character face,” but what really makes me special is my musical talent. The Gebrüder Heubach company made me around 1912. Go ahead – give me a good squeeze!
- I was delighted to visit the Letita Penn Doll Club in February. I joined the doll world in 1947. The girls, Patty Jo and Bonnie Lou, only think about their clothes, but I’m quite dapper myself!
- I was recently a guest on Antiques Road Show with my spunky wife and son. I was first a beloved comic strip character. The Knickerbocker Toy Company made me in 1938. I really could go for a sandwich now!
